Pros And Cons Of Exoticca Travel: An Analysis For Smart Travelers

Exoticca specializes in group travel that combine flights, accommodation, and guided experiences to worldwide destinations, all at competitive prices.

We dreamed of exploring the Galápagos Islands by cruise. But when we saw that a 10-day Celebrity Flora trip would cost over USD 20,000—before even factoring in flights—we had sticker shock.

Looking to save money, we snapped up Exoticca’s 14-day Ecuador, Amazon, and Galápagos package for under USD 2,500 each. Here’s our candid review—read on to see if an Exoticca adventure is right for you!

Overview Of Exoticca Travel

Exoticca is an online tour operator that bundles multi-destination trips at competitive prices. The company appeals to travelers who crave structure but want to skip the hassle of planning every detail.

While we aren’t travelers who prefer a structured trip, their affordable price point was the selling factor for us. Our trip included two Galápagos Islands but they now offer a package that visits three.

Types Of Travel Packages Offered

The company offers vacations across several categories:

  • Cultural tours focusing on historical sites and local traditions.
  • Adventure journeys with activities like hiking and wildlife viewing.
  • Beach and relaxation itineraries combining coastal destinations.
  • Multi-country circuits connecting neighboring regions.

Most trips with Exoticca blend guided group adventures with pockets of free time to explore at your own pace. Instead of having the same escort along for the whole trip, we got local guides, each brimming with insider stories and area expertise.

Target Audience

Exoticca primarily appeals to budget-conscious travelers aged 40-70 who want international experiences without having to plan logistics themselves. The company attracts first-time visitors to regions like Asia, South America, and the Middle East.

Couples make up a large part of Exoticca’s customers, especially those seeking milestone or retirement trips. The tours also accommodate small groups of friends and solo travelers who prefer organized itineraries.

Key Advantages Of Booking With Exoticca Travel

Exoticca packages bundle loads of travel perks at friendly prices, and their group adventures are perfect for meeting fellow explorers. Here’s what we loved about their unique travel approach.

Itineraries With Multiple Destinations

Exoticca structures its tours to cover multiple destinations within a single trip. Trips vary from multiple cities to several countries. Our trip to Ecuador included Quito (the capital), several of the Galápagos Islands, and the Amazon. Since we flew from Quito to the Galápagos, our internal flights were included.

A single Egypt tour, for example, might include Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and a Nile cruise, while a Peru package could encompass Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu.

The company handles all the transportation between stops, taking the hassle out of figuring out routes or booking transfers. This was a game-changer for us, especially since we didn’t speak the local language.

Competitive Pricing (Almost All Inclusive)

Exoticca’s holidays offer exceptional value, with bundles including international flights. It’s almost an all-inclusive holiday.

Our trip included round-trip flights from Vancouver to Quito and to the Galápagos Islands, all at a lower cost than booking independently. Solo flights for such journeys often exceed $1,500, so Exoticca’s under $2,500 per person was very affordable.

Most packages include daily breakfast, with many also covering additional meals specified in the itinerary. On our early departure from San Cristóbal, the hotel even included a brown bag breakfast of a fruit juice, empanada, and green apple.

What’s typically included:

  • Round-trip international flights.
  • Accommodation for the duration.
  • Daily breakfast and select other meals.
  • Ground transportation between destinations.
  • Professional tour guides.

What usually costs extra:

  • Visa fees.
  • Optional excursions beyond the core itinerary.
  • Most lunches and dinners not specified.
  • Personal expenses and souvenirs.
  • Travel insurance (unless selected).
  • Tips for guides and drivers.

Since we were traveling to the Galápagos Islands, our additional expenses included a Transit Control Card (TCT) at USD 20 each and the USD 200 per person Galápagos National Park entry fee.

Expertly Curated Experiences

Exoticca’s in-house specialists design itineraries based on destination knowledge and traveler critique. They revise itineraries annually after reviewing customer feedback.

Local guides bring specialized knowledge about their regions’ history and culture. They often speak English and the local language. Ours spoke English and Spanish.

We loved our itinerary’s rhythm: group adventures balanced with free time for our own quests. Three included tours kept things interesting, while free hours allowed for spontaneous discovery each day.

Flexible Booking Options

The company offers year-round departures for most destinations. Travelers can choose dates that fit their schedules or weather preferences.

Travelers can add days or upgrade from charm (3-star hotels) to superior (4-star) or luxury (5-star). One couple in our group of 16 decided to upgrade, thinking they’d get a suite in the same hotel. But Exoticca placed them in different hotels, making meeting up with the group during free time challenging.

Solo Traveler Option

Exoticca accommodates solo travelers on most group tours, and they pay a minimal single supplement fee. We had two solo travelers in our group of 16. They gained the social benefits of group travel and had companions for dinner or to share tours and taxis.

Solo travelers often appreciate the built-in social structure of group tours.

Comradery Of The Travel Group

Our Exoticca guide set up a WhatsApp group for sharing moments and tips. Some used it to round up dinner buddies, while others posted travel highlights. Even when we missed an outing, seeing everyone’s photos let us experience the fun vicariously.

One couple caught a magical video: a sea lion being born. Though we weren’t there in the moment, watching it through their lens, we truly felt swept up in the miracle of new life.

We thoroughly enjoyed the company of our group and arranged taxi tours on both the San Cristóbal and Santa Cruz Islands with others.

No Pressure Tour Sales

As loyal cruisers, we’re used to facing the relentless sales pitch for drink packages, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and photo sessions. So, imagine our delight when, with Exoticca, there was zero pressure to purchase extra excursions.

Exoticca staff discussed tours for each area and helped us find cheaper options with other vendors. They recommended alternative operators and arranged English-speaking taxi drivers for our adventures in the Galápagos highlands.

No Language Barriers

Exoticca Travel assigns English-speaking guides. In Ecuador, our guides spoke English and Spanish. In Japan, they will speak Japanese and English. This let us focus on the experience rather than translation.

Potential Drawbacks Of Exoticca Travel

While Exoticca offers curated travel packages to exotic destinations, several things may affect your travel experience.

No Direct Flights

To keep prices appealing, Exoticca often books connecting flights instead of direct routes. This sometimes meant we spent hours in airports and landed at faraway terminals, arriving a bit worn out—but still eager for adventure.

The flight arrangements prioritize cost savings over convenience. We initially had two flights to Ecuador, but it changed to three. We met others who traveled on four different planes. More flights and changes can increase the risk of lost luggage.

Limited Customization

Exoticca offers pre-packaged tour itineraries that leave minimal room for personalization. We cannot change the core elements of their tours, including hotel selections, scheduled activities, or the overall route.

This structure works well for travelers who prefer hassle-free planning, but limits those who want to tailor their experience.

Packages bundle accommodation, tours, and meals. You can skip the included activities for more free time. We felt our schedule had enough flexibility.

Itinerary And Flight Changes

Exoticca may change itineraries and flights post-booking. Our flights changed several times, and we had a hotel substitution in the Amazon.

The outgoing flight changes added significant extra travel time, and we spent almost 24 hours getting to Ecuador.

Initial Down Payment Of 60%

Exoticca requires a 60% deposit upfront, which can be seen as a significant commitment. However, instead of viewing this as a hurdle, consider it an investment in a well-organized and memorable travel experience.

Our Flex insurance allowed a refund as a future travel voucher, though we suggest purchasing cancellation insurance elsewhere for more flexibility.

Quality And Value Of Exoticca Tours

We felt our Ecuador travel package was well organized overall. We appreciated seeing a rep at the airport after almost 24 hours of travel time.

Accommodation Standards

Exoticca typically includes 3-star and 4-star hotels in its tour packages, though the exact accommodation level varies by destination and package tier. We enjoyed a 5-star Holiday Inn in Quito but had more rustic stays in the Galápagos Islands and Amazon.

We didn’t mind the rustic hotels; in fact, the Miconia in San Cristóbal scored a perfect 10 for location. Our Amazon lodge accommodation exceeded our expectations, and discovering slow-but-steady Wi-Fi surprised us. Who would have thought they had Wi-Fi in the jungle?

Inclusions vs. Additional Costs

Exoticca packages bundle several core elements. Breakfast is typically included daily, though lunch and dinner usually remain the traveler’s responsibility. Since we traveled to a third-world country, food was incredibly cheap, but good.

Travel insurance, visa fees, tickets to certain attractions, and gratuities are extras. Some excursions marketed as optional activities carry supplemental charges. We found better deals for excursions through local vendors, sometimes saving hundreds of dollars.

Ask about the tipping culture of the country you are visiting. 10% was recommended in Ecuador. However, countries like Singapore, Belgium, and China have a no-tipping culture.

Customer Reviews And Reputation

While reading online reviews, we found ratings ranging from 3.6 to 4.5 stars. However, we believe the best way to experience a company is to try it.

Of our group of 16, many had already traveled with Exoticca, and one couple was on their 7th trip with the company. That gave us a boost of confidence.

Was our trip perfect? No. There was a minor issue with a waterfall tour in the Amazon that was not well organized. I’d also say the tour wasn’t as advertised. However, it didn’t reflect negatively on our overall 14-day adventure.

Our vacation to Quito and the Galápagos Islands exceeded our expectations, and we got to scratch one place from our bucket list. Would we book with Exoticca again? Absolutely! Their packages make travel to popular destinations affordable.

Who Should Book With Exoticca

On the Singapore Flyer
Visiting Singapore

First-time visitors to complex destinations like Jordan, Peru, or Southeast Asia benefit most from Exoticca’s structured itineraries. We find that travelers who prefer not to handle logistics themselves appreciate having transportation, hotels, and activities pre-arranged.

It’s also a great solution for solo travelers who pay a minimal single supplement charge and have the added benefit of travel companions.

Exoticca may not suit you if you:

  • Need flexible schedules or want to deviate from set itineraries.
  • Prefer one location over multiple destinations.
  • Expect 5-star accommodation in all locations.

Tips For A Smooth Experience

Read all terms and conditions before booking. Exoticca’s cancellation policies and change fees can be restrictive compared to booking components separately.

Amazon lodge accommodation
Our rustic Amazon lodge accommodation

Research the local hotels by checking their independent reviews on platforms like TripAdvisor. We read multiple reviews and watched YouTube videos about our hotels, so we knew our Amazon lodge had no air conditioning.

We recommend verifying what’s included in your package price versus optional add-ons. Some tours include meals while others do not. Download their app to have up-to-date information while you travel.

Purchase comprehensive travel insurance from a third-party provider. This protects you if Exoticca’s limited flexibility causes flight delays or itinerary changes.

Lastly, go with an open mind. We enjoyed the company of others and the opportunity to see a destination we couldn’t afford to visit by cruising. Our land-based itinerary was fantastic, and we felt privileged to experience the unique paradise of the Galápagos Islands.
