Where To Stay In The Galápagos Islands For Every Budget
The Galápagos Islands offer accommodation across four inhabited islands. Options range from budget-friendly to luxury eco-lodges and resorts. Most properties are in the main port towns: Puerto Ayora, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, and Puerto Villamil, where you can sleep steps away from basking sea lions.
We stayed on different islands to experience Galápagos diverse wildlife. Our Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal, Isabela, and Floreana accommodation guide will help you choose the right base. Each island has characteristics that appeal to different travel styles and budgets.
The length of the itinerary, preferred activities, and comfort requirements can factor into the choice. Shorter trips may benefit from centrally located accommodations on Santa Cruz for easy access to multiple attractions, while longer stays might allow for the unique experiences of more remote islands like Floreana.

Overview Of Accommodation Options In Galápagos Islands
Let your budget guide your choice of Galápagos accommodation. You must fly from mainland Ecuador to Baltra or San Cristóbal to reach the islands. Then island-hop by ferry or fly to Isabela. Ferries run daily with average trips taking 2 to 3 hours. Flights are quicker but cost more.
Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal are the best options for those who prefer minimal travel, as flights from the mainland serve these islands. Choose from the following accommodation types.
Hotels and eco-lodges dominate the accommodation landscape. Standard hotels provide comfortable rooms with modern amenities, while eco-lodges emphasize sustainable practices and integrate local culture into the guest experience.
Hostels and guesthouses cater to budget-conscious travelers who don’t mind dormitory-style rooms. In Puerto Ayora and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, long picnic tables are a common sight in hostel common areas. Here, strangers swap snorkeling tips, discuss their next island adventures, and organize groups to share tour costs.
Cruise ships serve as floating hotels for visitors who prefer to wake up on different islands each day. Live-aboard vessels range from pricey to luxury yachts with naturalist guides. Cruise is an all-inclusive option with food and tours included in the price. Pricing is per person, not per room.

Choosing The Best Place To Stay In The Galápagos Islands
Santa Cruz Island, specifically Puerto Ayora, serves as the most popular base. This island offers the widest selection of hotels, restaurants, and tour operators. The central location makes day trips to nearby sites and other islands easy.
From here, you can reach must-see sites like the Charles Darwin Research Station, Tortuga Bay, and El Chato Tortoise Reserve all within a short 30- to 45-minute trip. While Puerto Ayora has a larger downtown area than Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal Island, taxis cost just USD 2.
San Cristóbal Island attracts visitors seeking a quieter atmosphere with excellent wildlife encounters. Puerto Baquerizo Moreno provides good accommodation options and serves as the provincial capital. We liked the slower-paced and less-touristy feel of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
Its downtown area is compact, with many hotels offering waterfront views.

Isabela Island suits travelers who want relaxed beach environments and specific wildlife experiences. Accommodation choices are more limited but adequate for most budgets. The island’s remote western location means longer travel times from the airport.
Floreana Island has minimal tourist infrastructure, with only basic lodging options. We recommend this island for adventurous travelers comfortable with rustic conditions. Properties near ports reduce transportation time and costs for daily excursions.
Staying On Santa Cruz Island
Santa Cruz offers the widest range of accommodation options in the Galápagos; all centered in the main town of Puerto Ayora. The island’s excellent infrastructure and central location make it an ideal base for exploring the archipelago.
Hotel Solymar Galápagos
Hotel Solymar Galápagos provides straightforward stays with essential amenities at reasonable rates. The rooms include air conditioning, private bathrooms, and basic furnishings suitable for travelers who plan to spend most of their time exploring.

Staying at this waterfront property gives easy access to the pier for boat departures and a short walk to local shops and restaurants. The hotel has a nice infinity pool that overlooks the water, as well as a good in-house restaurant.
Wake up to the sound of sea lion barking and birds chirping. This hotel offers good value for money, considering it’s on the waterfront.
Hotel Albatross
Hotel Albatross features clean, air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms and hot water. Its rooftop has a pool and a hot tub. We appreciated their reliable Wi-Fi and decent included buffet breakfast with an omelette station.
While it’s a 15-minute walk downtown, we could take a taxi for USD 2 instead. This hotel does not have an in-house restaurant, but La Casa del Bolon is a short walk away.

Our large street-facing room was bright, thanks to the streetlights and thin drapes. Interior rooms offer darker accommodation or bring an eye mask.
Ikala Galápagos Hotel
Ikala Galápagos Hotel is a 4-star property featuring elegantly designed suites, just a 2-minute walk from the Malecón and the Gus Angermeyer Ferry Terminal.
Guests rave about the complimentary breakfast and free Wi-Fi. The rooms are larger than they appear online. Visitors can enjoy a dip in the outdoor pool or savor meals at the rooftop restaurant, which boasts panoramic ocean views.

Sir Francis Drake Hostel
Sir Francis Drake Hostel is one of many hostels that caters to budget-conscious travelers. The property offers double, triple, quadruple, and family rooms, all with access to complimentary Wi-Fi in the heart of downtown. Pricing starts at under USD 40 a night.

San Cristóbal Hotels
San Cristóbal Island offers accommodations from intimate boutique properties to larger resorts. Most options are in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The island’s hotel scene caters to travelers seeking luxury amenities and proximity to the waterfront and wildlife.
Galápagos Sunset Hotel

The Galápagos Sunset Hotel sits on the waterfront with great views of the harbor. We felt this property suits travelers who prioritize location over luxury amenities.
The hotel is within walking distance of the main town attractions and the sea lion colonies along the Malecon. Rooms feature air conditioning, private bathrooms, and complimentary breakfast.
Some units offer ocean views, although we found these rooms quite pricey compared to neighboring hotels.
Miconia Hotel

Miconia Hotel positions itself as a boutique property. It’s named after the endemic miconia plant species. Many rooms feature two bedrooms: one with a double bed and the other with a single.
The rooms have large open screens above the windows, which let the noise seep in. We found we had to run the water for a long time before it turned hot enough to shower.
The upper breakfast room provides panoramic views of the town and the ocean. The included breakfast was basic but made with fresh ingredients.

Miconia Hotel includes a restaurant focused on Ecuadorian cuisine, with seafood sourced from local fishermen. The hotel pool was extremely cold. We found the ocean warmer.
Hotel Zayapa
Hotel Zayapa operates as a mid-range option next to Miconia Hotel. It combines local design elements with modern comforts. The property features a garden courtyard, creating a quiet retreat from the town’s activity.

Each room includes air conditioning, private bathrooms, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The hotel emphasizes sustainability practices, including water conservation measures and locally sourced breakfast ingredients.
Hotel Indigo Galápagos by IHG
Hotel Indigo Galápagos represents the first international hotel brand property in the archipelago. The hotel is located on the waterfront, farther from Malecon, offering a more serene escape.

The property features 54 rooms and suites with floor-to-ceiling windows, rainfall showers, and contemporary furnishings. Its design incorporates Galápagos-inspired elements, including blue-footed booby motifs and volcanic rock accents.
Facilities include a rooftop pool, fitness center, and full-service restaurant. The hotel operates under IHG’s sustainability guidelines adapted for the sensitive Galápagos environment. Room rates typically reflect the premium positioning and international brand standards.
The Galeodan Suites

The Galeodan Suites operates as a small, apartment-style property offering extended-stay accommodation. Each suite includes a kitchenette with refrigerator, stovetop, and basic cooking equipment.
This property suits families and longer-term visitors who prefer self-catering options. The suites feature separate living areas, private bathrooms, and air conditioning.
Isabela Island
Isabela Island is the largest island in the Galápagos archipelago, offering unique highland locations and beachfront properties. The island’s accommodation options range from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxury lodges positioned in volcanic highlands.
Hotel La Casa De Marita
Hotel La Casa De Marita operates as a family-run guesthouse in Puerto Villamil, the main settlement on Isabela Island. The property sits on Isabela Beach within a short walk of the pier and local restaurants.
Staff are attentive, rooms are large, and the hotel offers a good selection of breakfast options. Being at the end of Playa Isabela, expect a quiet stay.
The location allows easy access to tour operators offering excursions to Los Tuneles, Sierra Negra Volcano, and the nearby wetlands.

Scalesia Lodge
Scalesia Lodge is positioned in the highlands on volcanic slopes, approximately 20 minutes from Puerto Villamil. The lodge features 24 safari-style luxury tents spread across a 16-hectare private forest reserve.
Each 500+ sq. ft. tent includes comfortable beds, private bathrooms with hot water, and viewing decks overlooking the Pacific Ocean and neighboring islands. The property operates on sustainable principles, including solar power and water-conservation systems.
If you’re seeking a high-end glamping experience, this is it. Guests can explore the surrounding forest trails where giant tortoises roam freely. The lodge includes guided nature walks, all meals prepared with local ingredients, and evening wildlife observation opportunities.

Isabela Hostels
Like the other islands, Isabela has its share of inexpensive hostels. Among the top choices, hostels like Hostel La Casa de Marita and Isabela Beach House feature communal areas, starting at under USD 40 a night.
Floreana Island
Floreana is the least populated island in the Galápagos, offering a quieter alternative to the busier tourist destinations. Visitors seeking isolation and a connection to the old Galápagos’ way of life are drawn to this remote location.
Hotel Wittmer
Hotel Wittmer operates as a family-run lodge managed by descendants of one of the island’s original settler families. This property provides an authentic, intimate experience for guests interested in the island’s unique history.
Floreana Lava Lodge
This eco-friendly property (formerly Red Mangrove Floreana Lodge) comprises 10 independent cabins built from sustainably sourced pine. It sits on black lava sands at the ocean’s edge, offering direct beach access.
Visitors to Floreana can expect excellent wildlife viewing opportunities without the crowds. The accommodation provides comfortable lodging rather than luxury amenities. We recommend this island for travelers who prioritize natural experiences and solitude.

Final Considerations For Your Galápagos Accommodation
Consider the trade-offs between island locations. Santa Cruz offers the most amenities and dining options, while Isabela provides a quieter, more remote experience. San Cristóbal sits somewhere in between, with good facilities and easier access to the airport.
We recommend checking what’s included in your accommodation rate before booking:
- Breakfast (many hotels include this).
- Airport or port transfers.
- Air conditioning or fans.
- Hot water availability.
Remember that accommodation quality doesn’t vary drastically between islands. Your choice should depend more on the atmosphere you prefer and the activities you want easy access to, rather than worrying about finding superior lodging on one island versus another.
Also, verify whether your accommodation can help arrange tours and activities. Many hotels have relationships with local operators and can secure better rates than booking independently.
Lastly, decide whether staying on one island is better than island hopping. Island hopping can cut into time and create more travel logistics, better suited to those with extended stays.
